GLOSSARY

ALUPRINTING: Uses specially formulated dyes, which are easily absorbed into anodised aluminium to produce simple one-colour labels through to intricate multi-colour nameplates. Products made this way are permanent, durable, abrasion-resistant, wear resistant and light-fast, since they are not subject to constraints, which affect items where the colour (i.e. printing ink) is present as a surface deposit.

ANODISING: A process, which produces a hard, abrasion-resistant, protective oxide film on the surface of aluminium or its oxides. This film is able to absorb and retain certain dyes, making it ideal for 'colour anodising' or 'aluprinting'.

ENGRAVING: A computerised artwork is transferred onto the substrate via the blade of a high-tech and extremely accurate cutting machine. The width of cutter and depth of the final cut can be varied to your requirements. Also includes routing of materials such as plastics and metals to produce custom designed shapes and cut outs.

ETCHING: A negative version of the artwork required is printed onto the plate in etch-resistant ink. The plate is then passed through corrosive acid, which affects only the exposed metal to produce a design with high quality (since it can incorporate detail such as half-tones), elegance and a long-lasting, durable finish.

HALF-TONE: Breaking down the image into dots of various sizes - small dots for light areas, large dots for dark areas/shadows.

LAMINATE: Two or more layers of different coloured plastic chemically bonded together. Especially used in engraving to provide contrasting colour in the engraved characters without having to fill them.

PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM: Universal numbered colour scale used to produce industry recognised colour matches for printing etc.

PROOF: The artwork submitted to the customer for final approval before production, usually by fax or e-mail.

SCREEN-PRINTING: (Silk-screening) Applying an image to an object by squeezing ink through a stencilled screen, allowing the ink to become bonded to the substrate and form a permanent image.

THERMAL TRANSFER: Transfer of a wax-based ink onto the label using heat.
